Joseph Sherlie [Scherley, Sherley, Shirley, Shirlie] : (fl London, 1607–10). English lutenist, viol player and composer. Between October 1609 and October 1610 he was the viol teacher of Christian Crusse, a Danish apprentice in Robert Cecil's household. His surviving output consists of 20 lyra viol pieces, so he was presumably an exponent of the technique. They are graceful works, similar in style to the lyra viol dances of Alfonso Ferrabosco.
