These pieces are presented by the composer as “the first which have yet been published”. They are preceded by a lengthy introduction on viol playing, legato bowing and ornaments, a table of the latter being provided. The actual pieces consist of preludes, allemandes, courantes, sarabands, jigs, gavottes, minuets, chaconnes, occasionally with “doubles”, either in ordinary notation or in tablature.
