Giuseppe Sammartini, Sammartini also spelled San Martini, byname Il Londonese, (born Jan. 6, 1695, Milan—died November 1750, London), oboist and composer prominent in England in the first half of the 18th century and brother of Giovanni Battista Sammartini. The orchestra of Handel's opera company at the King's Theatre consisted of outstanding musicians, including Giuseppe Sammartini, for whom London also became the new home. Here he was successful not only as an oboe virtuoso, but also as a composer. The otherwise rather critical Charles Burney praised his music "full of artistry, originality and fire".
